The Importance of Compliance and Safety in Retail Construction and Installation

Posted in | 6th October 2025 | By Georgie Williams-Pitt

At RMS, safety and compliance are at the heart of everything we do in retail construction and installation. As Health and Safety Manager, I know that ensuring a safe working environment is not just a legal requirement but is essential for protecting everyone who works for RMS and maintaining the high standards our clients expect. Prioritising safety and compliance also allows us to deliver projects efficiently, on time, and to the highest quality.

Our commitment to ISO 45001 certification underscores our dedication to maintaining the highest safety standards in every project we undertake.

Our Approach to Health & Safety

I firmly believe that safety is everyone’s responsibility. At RMS, we embed health and safety into our culture, ensuring all team members operate with awareness, care, and accountability.

Here’s how we do it:

1) Comprehensive Site Inductions & Safety Walks

Every retail environment is unique, and our teams adapt to assess and manage risks accordingly. Before any project begins, we:

  • Familiarise ourselves with store specific health and safety procedures.
  • Identify emergency exits, assembly points and key safety features.

Sign in and out using both the store’s protocol and RMS’s MyFlex™ app for accurate record keeping.

2) Ongoing Training & Safety Culture

A well trained workforce is a safe workforce. That’s why we invest in continuous training through Toolbox Talks and specialised awards via the MyFlex™ App’s Awards platform. Training covers essential safety topics such as:

  • Manual handling best practices.
  • Safe use of tools and equipment.
  • Risk awareness and hazard prevention.

Our teams hold industry recognised qualifications, ensuring they meet and often exceed the latest safety regulations.

3) Risk Assessment & Method Statements (RAMS)

Every task we undertake is supported by thorough Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS). These help us:

  • Identify potential hazards before work begins.
  • Implement proactive risk mitigation strategies.
  • Clearly communicate safety measures to all team members.

We provide generic RAMS for standard tasks and customised RAMS for specialist projects, ensuring full compliance with store specific requirements. We also carry out dynamic risk assessments whenever conditions change on site.

4) Incident Reporting & Continuous Improvement

No safety process is complete without effective incident reporting. Through the MyFlex™ App, our teams can:

  • Report accidents and near misses in real time.
  • Ensure swift corrective actions are taken.
  • Maintain transparency and accountability to continuously improve our safety practices.

Our Commitment to Compliance

At RMS, we are committed to leading the industry in safe and compliant retail transformation services. Adherence to key safety accreditations, including ISO 45001 and SEIRS certification, demonstrates our proactive approach to workplace safety.

By prioritising the wellbeing of our workforce, we consistently deliver high quality retail construction and installation services with minimal risk or disruption to our clients.

I firmly believe that a safe workplace is a productive workplace, and we are dedicated to upholding the highest health and safety standards in every retail transformation project we undertake.
