Overview
Boots, one of the UK's largest pharmacy-led health and beauty retailers, embarked on a significant store upgrade at their Edinburgh branch. The project at this store is one of many stores that RMS are currently completing as part of their Macro store transformations.
It involved a comprehensive overhaul of the store's layout by updating the existing structure and introducing new fixtures and furniture. The transformation aimed to optimise the store’s flow and create an inviting, modernised environment, while ensuring minimal disruption to the store’s daily operations.
RMS delivered end-to-end project management, overseeing the merchandising and installation teams to ensure the transformation was executed seamlessly.
Approach
RMS played a pivotal role in the store transformation by leading the project management, coordinating and guiding all elements of the transformation, ensuring that each phase of work adhered to the project plan and quality standards.
Here's how RMS project managed the Boots store upgrade:
Project Planning
RMS led the entire project planning process with construction project management to oversee the initial surveys, project planners to create the phasing plan and in store project management. This included organising and coordinating multiple teams to complete the installation over a four-week period. The work was scheduled to take place in the evenings when the store was closed, ensuring that the store could trade without interruption during the day.
Installation of 420 New Gondolas
RMS implemented the installation of 420 new gondolas, which were essential to the updated store layout. Over two weeks, the store teams responsible for installation worked with RMS’s guidance to move, adjust and replace gondolas, ensuring they aligned perfectly with the new design.
Beauty BRI Equipment and Brand Introduction
RMS managed the introduction of new Beauty BRI equipment and the setup of branded displays. By working closely with merchandising teams, RMS ensured that displays adhered to the new layout and maintained Boots’ merchandising standards.
Self-Selection Furniture

RMS also managed the planned moves and replacements of the self-selection furniture. This required careful planning to ensure the new furniture was placed strategically to enhance the customer experience.
Installation of New Till and Order & Collect Cupboards

Five new "Order & Collect" cupboards were added to provide better service for online order pick-ups, creating a more seamless omnichannel shopping experience.
Photo Printers and Accessories Relocation

The project also involved planning the relocating of the photo printers and accessories to a more accessible location, improving both functionality and aesthetics for customers utilising photo services.
Results
The Boots Edinburgh store successfully completed its transformation within the four-week timeline.
By utilising RMS's project management services, Boots in Edinburgh was able to smoothly transition to a new and improved store layout. RMS’s expertise in project planning and execution ensured that the project was completed on time, with minimal disruption to the store's operations.
RMS will continue to support Boots across their other stores with the Macro store transformation projects.
